How to create WooCommerce product bundles: two methods

WooCommerce product bundles

A great way to offer a personalised shopping experience is by letting customers build their own WooCommerce product bundles. This lets customers choose the items they want to include in their WooCommerce product bundle instead of purchasing a pre-configured one.

Creating WooCommerce product bundles can help you increase the average order value on your e-commerce store. Instead of purchasing one or two products, customers will be more likely to personalise their product bundle by mixing and matching several different items. This can also be a great way to limit the number of items per bundle and decide which ones will be a part of the WooCommerce product bundle.

However, this functionality is not possible with the default WooCommerce plugin. To create your own WooCommerce product bundles, you’ll need to use a plugin.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how you can create WooCommerce product bundles using two methods. We’ll also go over some benefits and examples of WooCommerce product bundles for inspiration.

What product bundles are

In short, a product bundle is a collection of different products you package as one. Customers can add multiple products to a product bundle. In other words, they can choose which items they’d like to include in their bundle. It’s also a great way to incentivise customers to buy more products.

You might also know a product bundle by a number of other names:

  • Kits. As an example, Dollar Shave Club sells a shaving kit that includes multiple items in a grouped product bundle. This bundle may include razors, shaving creams, toiletries, and anything else relevant.
  • Subscription boxes. You can also set up product bundles as subscription boxes. These are perfect for all sorts of products including fitness products, meals, and snack packs.
  • Build-your-own box. This lets customers add products to a generic box based on their preferences. Build-your-own box examples include custom cereal boxes or a mixed case of wine.
  • Gift boxes or hampers. WooCommerce product bundles as hampers and gift boxes let customers mix and match products. You can even offer an option for gift wrapping.

On the whole, you’ll create WooCommerce product bundles from other items in your stock. Of course, you can sell products on your online store separately and in bundles to cater to different types of buyers. By extension, product bundles are suitable for all sorts of businesses.

3 benefits of creating WooCommerce product bundles

Product bundles are great for both store owners and customers. Let’s take a look at the main benefits of creating product bundles.

1. Product bundles are customisable

By creating customisable product bundles, customers get the exact items they want instead of having to purchase a pre-selected product bundle. For instance, you can sell a case of wines you curate versus letting customers select the wines they want to include in their case.

Some customers might choose to add all white wines to their case, while others might mix it up. The key perk here is the customisable nature of the bundle.

2. Product bundles encourage customers to try out new products

Another benefit of creating WooCommerce product bundles is how you can encourage customers to try out new products. For example, shoppers can choose to buy a kit of beauty products versus buying products individually.

When customers buy products individually, they may be hesitant to try out something new. This decreases the chances of shoppers adding an unfamiliar product to their cart. However, with a kit they’ll get to try out new products at a better price. For example, they might try out body butter in a kit that includes standard beauty products.

3. Product bundles can help you grow your customer base

WooCommerce product bundles on your online store can help you sell more items per order. This not only increases the average order value but also expands your customer base. Since you sell to individual consumers and people looking to buy kits or gifts, your WooCommerce store can cater to a lot more people at once.

In addition, you can come up with new ways to market your WooCommerce products. For instance, you can offer bulk discounts on WooCommerce product bundles, like saving ten percent on all bundles or five percent on certain types of bundles.

This boosts the effectiveness of your next sales campaign and can help attract new customers. Everyone loves discounts, and offering them on WooCommerce product bundles can help boost sales and revenue for your business.

Examples of product bundles

We’ve talked about examples already, but haven’t shown you them yet. Let’s put this right next with a few different types of product bundles.

Kits

When you take a look at a kit, it’s often a WooCommerce product bundle that brings together a number of related products. A starter kit is a popular way to introduce a customer to your brand:

A shaving kit WooCommerce product bundle.

Here’s a demo of our shaving starter kit bundle. Customers can select from products such as safety razors, fancy straight razors, horsehair brushes, artificial brushes, basic shaving cream, and an ultra lather shaving cream. From there, they can add them to the product bundle.

After the customer selects three products, they can add the product bundle to their shopping cart. This way you give customers the ability to choose what’s in their box. This increases customer satisfaction and loyalty towards your brand.

You’ll also notice that the price updates based on the bundled items. This lets the customer forget about the maths, get straight to the checkout fast.

Subscription boxes

If you want to sell a WooCommerce product bundle as a recurring purchase, a subscription box is ideal (especially if you use extensions such as WooCommerce Subscriptions). You’ll see these are bundles such as a seven-day meal plan, as in our demo here:

A subscription box as a WooCommerce product bundle.

A customer can select seven meals to include in the subscription box. You’re able to select the delivery based on when you need to start your seven-day meal subscription using the drop-down menu.

Subscribers can also add special instructions to their bundles. The field is ideal for noting input any special requirements, such as a note about food allergies, requesting extra sauce, tissues, or cutlery.

Build-your-own products

Build-your-own product bundles let customers personalise their box based on their own preference before buying.

In this example, customers can select and add different ingredients to fully personalise and customise their cereal. After selecting the size of the bundle, they can select a base cereal from a number of different product options.

They can also select and add the rest of the ingredients and give their cereal a custom name. Once this part of the process finishes, you can add the product bundle to the cart, and proceed to the checkout page.

Gift boxes or hampers

WooCommerce product bundles in the form of gift boxes or hampers let customers mix and match products. Let’s take a look at an example:

A gift hamper style of WooCommerce product bundle.

Customers have the option to use the Deluxe hamper type, which offers a free gift with the WooCommerce product bundle if a hamper includes a minimum of six items. Once shoppers select the product type, they can select from different WooCommerce products such as different blends of coffee and teas. Once a bundle has six items or more, it will also include a breakfast mug.

How to create WooCommerce product bundles – two methods

There are two ways you can create WooCommerce product bundles and start selling them on your WooCommerce store.

This method involves adding each individual item to your WooCommerce store. You can then use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin to create your product bundle. You’re able to include various options to help customers choose and select items.

A WooCommerce product bundle as displayed on the front end.

You can also choose to create product bundles using the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin. This way, you can list the WooCommerce products available to customers for their product bundle:

A product table within WordPress.

Next, we’ll take a look at each of these methods in turn.

1. Creating product bundles using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

Here, we’ll take a look at how you can create product bundles using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin. It’s perfect for selling product kits, subscription boxes, and build-your-own box style product bundles.

We’ll start by adding each item as an individual WooCommerce product, within an example of a mixed wine case product bundle. Then, we’ll use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin to create a product bundle with various options.

Add each item as an individual WooCommerce product

First, add each item earmarked for your WooCommerce product bundle as an individual WooCommerce product:

Adding products to a WooCommerce product page.

While this example uses six products, you can add as many as you’d like. This selection will be what a customer chooses from for their product bundle.

Create the WooCommerce product bundle

After you add your WooCommerce products, you’ll need to create another product for the WooCommerce product bundle itself. It’s a similar approach to an individual product:

A WooCommerce product bundle page.

After adding a title, description, and images, navigate to the Product data meta box to configure the product bundle’s details:

The Product data metabox.

Start off by setting the Regular Price ($) equal to the flat-rate for your WooCommerce product bundle price. This example will use a set fixed price for adding three wine bottles to the bundle. However, the total WooCommerce product bundle price will not change based on the products it contains:

The Product data metabox, with items for a product bundle selected.

From here, click the Product Add-Ons tab to create your product bundle, and follow these steps:

  1. Click the Add Group button.
  2. Click on the Add Field button.
  3. Set the Field Type to Products using the drop-down menu.
  4. Enter all of the products you want in the product bundle within the Child Products settings area.

You can also choose how to display individual products within the WooCommerce product bundle using the Products Layout option. Also, a shopper can select the quantities for each item within the bundle using the Independent setting:

The Product Quantities box, set to Independent.

To force customers to select at least three wine bottles, you can set the Min Child Products accordingly. You can also restrict customers to a maximum quantity per product bundle if you wish.

It’s important to note that you need to set the Discount text field to 100 if you’ve set the flat rate for your product bundle in the General tab, from the steps mentioned earlier. This way, you won’t charge extra for the individual products.

Preview your WooCommerce product bundle

Once you finish creating your WooCommerce product bundle using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, take a look at it on the front end:

With this example, customers can select from any six white or red wines, and add it to a WooCommerce product bundle.

Create variable product bundles with fixed item quantity

If you want to create a variable WooCommerce product bundle based on dynamic pricing rather than a flat, static one, the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate can do that. As such, if a customer selects a higher-priced product, the bundle will cost more.

You might also offer a discount to encourage people to buy the product bundle. For this example, we’ll set up everything similar to the previous section, you just need to set different prices.

A WooCommerce product page for a product bundle.

Start by going to the General Tab and set the Regular Price text field to 0. Now, set the Price label display to Hide Price from the drop-down menu.

Next, click on the Product Add-Ons tab and set the Discount field to either the flat or percentage discount you’d like to offer with your WooCommerce product bundle. For a ten percent discount on the total product bundle, enter 10 as the Discount, and Percentage from the Discount Type drop-down menu

The variable price for the WooCommerce product bundle will display on the front end:

There’s more you can do with variable pricing – let’s take a look at another example.

Create variable price product bundles with variable item quantity

You might want to offer variable pricing for your WooCommerce product bundle, but with variable quantities too. It’s possible in a few quick steps.

If you use the same settings from the previous section, you’ll need to make a few minor tweaks to let shoppers choose the number of items to add to the product bundle:

The Product Add-Ons metabox options.

You can keep everything similar to the last section, except that the Min Child Products and Max Child Products should equal 12. This will require shoppers to choose at least 12 wine bottles. Also, you can also alter the Min Child Products field to whatever set minimum quantity you’d like customers to add to their product bundle.

You can also leave the Max Child Products text field blank for letting customers add as many items to the WooCommerce product bundle as they want. Using these two fields, you can either offer customers to select the quantity of each item as desired, or you can add a limit but make it higher.

You’ll see this reflected on the front end:

A variable WooCommerce product bundle as displayed on the front end.

Of course, there are other plugins to help you create WooCommerce product bundles. Let’s take a look at the second method.

2. Creating product bundles using WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate

Here, we’ll take a look at how you can create product bundles using the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin.

This plugin lets you list the WooCommerce products you’d like to offer customers as part of a product bundle within a table layout.

First, you’ll need to create a product page to display the table layout format for the WooCommerce product bundle. Start by creating a product page for the table by Navigate to Pages > Add New within WordPress, and give your page an appropriate title. Next, add the Product Table Ultimate Block to your page, and select products for your product bundle from the interface.

Once you add the table to the new product page, you can configure it to list the available items customers can add to their product bundle.

The WordPress Block Editor showing a product table list.

Next, check out the Block Editor sidebar. First, set the Product Source to Categories and choose an appropriate category and ordering system. This will display the various items from the product bundle in the table.

The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin lets you choose which columns will show in the product table. You can edit these using the Columns text field. You can display thumbnail, name, categories, price, and add-to-cart columns.

There’s also an option to show product quantities on your product table. What’s more, customers can select the number of items within the bundle, direct from the product table.

This approach is perfect to let customers mix and match products within the bundle. When you finish, you can preview the changes on the front end:

It’s quick and simple to achieve, yet offers professional (and customer-friendly) results.

Conclusion

Setting up WooCommerce product bundles on your online store is a great way to boost sales and attract new customers. You improve the customer experience on your online store by letting customers choose their own product bundle instead of selling only pre-configured product bundles.

What’s more, product bundles motivate customers to purchase larger quantities of products instead of buying them individually. As a result, you’re able to increase your average order value and generate more revenue per sale.

The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin is perfect for selling kits, subscription boxes, and build-your-own box style product bundles. It gives you plenty of options to create your product bundle and set prices and discounts the way you want.
